The show, based on the Stephen King novel, debuted in June 2013 to 13.1 million viewers, proving to CBS that viewers were open to a summer slate.

The network would launch Halle Berry's Extant and freshman series Zoo in summers that followed as part of an effort to beef up the season's offerings.

But this season has seen ratings cool.

The series finale, CBS says, will show the Dome come down and answer many questions about its origin and power.

Here's a promo for the final episodes:

The last episode airs Thursday, Sept. 10. at 10 p.m. on CBS, after which it will be gone but never forgotten. After all, it's they say, "Dome cry because it's over, smile because it happened."

Also, puns live forever.

Dome sweet dome. Dome is where the heart is. Dome, a deer, a female deer. Dome-estic bliss. You can't go dome again https://t.co/xPxHs9FUIl— Margaret Lyons (@margeincharge) August 31, 2015
