An artist totally reimagined what U.S. dollar bills should look like

Sorry, George. Sorry, Abe. U.S. currency was long overdue for a face lift.

As part of his Master's thesis at the Basel School of Design in Switzerland, American artist Travis Purrington revamped bills with a more modern twist.

Here are his new designs:

By scrapping the wig-donning presidents and flags and replacing them with minimalist geometric patterning and vibrant illustrations, Purrington opened up a portal into futuristic America.

Not to be overlooked, he left a few subtle nods to American traditionalism beneath the shiny coat of modernity. Purrington told Mashable that the colored triangles on the bills represent the olive branch, peace or diplomacy and the non-colored triangles represent the arrows of defense for the nation during unrest.

The new bills are also interwoven with quotes from historical U.S. documents and Latin expressions that embody the spirit of the founding fathers.

"The end goal was not as much to create a functional replacement for the U.S. dollar as to create a discussion about contemporary monetary value," Purrington said.

If you noticed the glaring absence of the $1 bill, though, that wasn't an oversight.

"The $1 was dropped from the lineup as a way to communicate that we should just do that already," Purrington added. "It's had a fantastic run, but it's time to let it go. If the U.S. dollar starts going up in value, we can always bring it back."
