One of the fastest-growing wildfires in California history struck an area about 100 miles north of San Francisco over the weekend. The Valley Fire has consumed more than 1,000 structures and at least 400 homes, growing to 61,000 acres as of Monday morning eastern time.

During the day on Sunday, the fire consumed about 40,000 acres in under 17 hours, a growth rate that veteran firefighters told reporters is unheard of in their experience.

In the aftermath, the community of Middletown and other surrounding areas had been hit with extensive damage.
