Shots of bridges and ferries are cool and all -- but we think the real use case for Instagram's new Hyperlapse app might just be sports.

At the US Open Wednesday night, I Hyperlapsed a game between Venus Williams and Timea Bacsinszky. With a few taps, a six minute game of tennis became 30 seconds of furious back and forth action. It's like the ultimate game of Pong, but in real life.

Using Hyperlapse at the US Open got me thinking about the potential this technology holds for sports video. There's something very cool about seeing all of the small movements that take place during the course of an athletic event sped up with smooth motion.

It's hard not to imagine we're going to see tons of Hyperlapse compilations for soccer, football, basketball and beyond. Even better, it will be simplicity itself to come up with a tool that turns these videos into GIFs. We'll no doubt see a lot of Hyperlapse at the next Olympics.
