Verizon reported activating 3.1 million iPhones in the third quarter, 21% of which were the newest model running on the LTE network, for a grand total of 651,000 iPhone 5 devices. The carrier activated 2.7 million iPhones in the second quarter.

Apple, for its part, won't report earnings until next week and usually doesn't break out sales by iPhone model. The two other major U.S. carriers -- AT&T and Sprint -- will report earnings before then, though, which should give some sense of iPhone sales in the U.S.

Keep in mind though that the figures for these three carriers do not represent global sales of the iPhone, which should be significantly greater.

For comparison, Apple reported selling more than 5 million iPhone 5s in the first weekend the device went on sale. It was a seemingly impressive figure, but one which disappointed investors who had hoped for closer to 8 million. However, supply constraints appear to have limited overall sales. All eyes will be on the earnings reports coming up to find out just how much a success the latest iPhone has been.
