Verizon Activates 3.9 Million iPhones in Second Quarter

If Verizon's latest numbers are any indication, Apple's iPhone shipments for the second quarter may be better than expected.

Verizon reported Thursday that it activated 7.5 million smartphones during the second quarter, 51% of which were iPhones, or just under 3.9 million. That represents a more than 40% increase in iPhone activations from the same quarter a year ago.

Apple is scheduled to report earnings on July 23.

Overall, Verizon beat Wall Street's consensus estimates for earnings, with a profit of $2.25 billion, or $0.78 per share. Wall Street had expected Verizon to report earnings-per-share of $0.72. However, Verizon's revenue of $29.8 billion for the quarter came in a little below Wall Street's estimates of $29.83 billion.

Verizon's stock was down by about 1.5% in pre-market trading following the report, while Apple's stock was up nearly 1%.
