Google isn't the only company to overhaul its logo this week.

Verizon followed the tech giant's lead on Wednesday with a minimalist new look that downsizes the telecom's iconic lightning bolt-shaped slash into a dinky checkmark in the corner of the logo. The company also did away with the red "Z" that trailed beneath the last two letters in favor of a simpler design.

The makeover, first reported by Ad Age and confirmed by the company shortly after, is the first major tweak since the company launched its current nameplate fifteen years ago.

It comes on the heels of Verizon's recent acquisition of web portal AOL for $4.4 billion in a bid to latch onto the company's advertising technology. In a company statement, a spokesperson said the new look would match the company's "renewed purpose."

"The new brand identity takes the best elements of Verizon’s heritage, represented by its colors and the Verizon 'checkmark,' and transforms them for a new era," the company wrote in its announcement.

The change comes just after Google shed the serifs from its iconic logo with a sleek revamp on Tuesday to blockier letters and a colorful new icon for mobile.

The company also released a video Wednesday afternoon explaining the change:
