Vice has hired former Obama official Alyssa Mastromonaco for its chief operating officer role, adding a veteran with high-profile experience as the media company executes CEO Shane Smith's plan for global domination.

The hiring, first reported by The New York Times, comes after Vice recently laid out plans to expand internationally and expand its video operations.

Vice has been able to hatch Smith's plans with the help of numerous major funding rounds including a recent $500-million round.

Mastromonaco formerly served as President Barack Obama's deputy chief of staff for operations. She is slated to start in January. Richard Waterlow, who had served as the COO, will now become president of Vice's international side.
