Vine Tops List of Free iPhone Apps in App Store

Less than three months after Twitter released Vine, the popular video-sharing service has topped the U.S. App Store's list of free iPhone apps.

Vine, which lets users create and share six-second videos, debuted to much fanfare in January. The mobile service was acquired by Twitter last October.

Rus Yusupov and Bobby McKenna, Vine's respective co-founder and designer, took to Twitter to celebrate the app's achievement.

Hey guys, remember that time we made the No. 1 most popular app in the world? @ckb @dhof @bobby @vineapp twitter.com/rus/status/321…— Rus Yusupov (@rus) April 8, 2013

As The Next Web noted, however, Vine is only number one in the U.S., and nowhere else in the world.

Categorized under "social networking" apps in the App Store, Vine has seen a meteoric rise over the past few months, with only minor snafus along the way. (Back in late January, Twitter accidentally highlighted porn in Vine's "Editors' Picks" section, and later apologized.)

More recently, the service launched trending hashtags, helping users explore content with greater ease.
