Sugar-free desserts, cornmeal mush and cottage cheese for dinner might sounds like our worst dining nightmare. But to the United States federal government, it was a perfectly suitable American wartime meal.

Uncle Sam has had his eye on America's food since the late 19th century when the United States saw some of its earliest legislation regarding food safety.

Food propaganda has flourished since then, especially during the first and second World Wars, when meals were carefully rationed.

We've rounded up 12 wartime government-issued food posters we're not sure we'd follow today.
