On the other side of Cuba, away from the bustling streets and antique cars that decorate Havana, exists a more peaceful, less-developed landscape that few Americans have seen.
Many cite eastern Cuba’s role as the historical birthplace of the country’s uprisings, from the 19th wars of independence from Spain to the revolution that began with Fidel Castro’s attack on the Moncada military barracks on a hilltop overlooking the city. A mere 90 miles from the U.S., Santiago de Cuba is an untouched cultural gem.
