The largest retailer in the U.S., Walmart, has joined the ranks of stores backing away from selling hoverboards following the government's notice that the devices are unsafe.

As recently as Monday, hoverboards were listed as available for sale on the company's website, but if you search for the device on Walmart's website Wednesday you'll find no listing for any brand of hoverboard.

Walmart did not immediately respond to multiple requests for comment from Mashable, however, at least one report from the Minneapolis StarTribune indicates that the move to remove hoverboards occurred late Tuesday night.

That report claimed that the retailer has decided to halt the sale of hoverboards until device makers can prove that their products are in line with the safety guidelines referenced by the U.S. government.

In a similar move, Bed, Bath & Beyond has confirmed that it will also remove hoverboards from its stores.

"We are in receipt of the CPSC's letter regarding self balancing scooters (i.e. hoverboards)," a Bed, Bath & Beyond spokesperson told Mashable.

"In an abundance of caution, we are removing the hoverboards from sale pending our investigation into compliance with these new standards. In addition, if a customer is unhappy with a hoverboard, or any other item purchased from Bed Bath & Beyond, they may return the item to any of our stores and receive a refund with proof of purchase."

Walmart and Bed, Bath & Beyond join a growing list of major retailers pulling hoverboards from their stores, including Target, Toys "R" Us and Amazon.
