Olympic athletes risk life, limb and pride for a shot at shiny neckwear. With those risks come moments of seemingly impossible triumph and far less joyous moments of mortifying pain.

German weightlifter Matthias Steiner experienced the latter when he lost his grip on a 432-pound barbell during Tuesday's super-heavyweight weightlifting finals. The defending gold medalist heaved the bar above him, but he failed to straightened his legs, causing the bar to crash down on his head and neck.

Miraculously, Steiner escaped serious injury, even standing up immediately after the accident. Well, miracle maybe -- Reddit has a different theory.
