Wesabe API Means Money Mashups

Possibly the worst websites in the world are online banks. It's 2007, but my bank's website still only allows access through Internet Explorer (ironic, since it's the least secure among browsers), doesn't let me view multiple accounts in one place and intentionally makes it difficult to pay off my credit card in the hope that I forget.

But online finance manager and social network Wesabe - pretty much under the radar until now - just made a fundamental change that puts the power back in the hands of the user: they've provided an API for all the bank accounts they support, meaning you can take your banking data wherever you like, mash it up, automatically download it to Excel, aggregate it on financial sites and the rest. It's not limited to the US either: Wesabe supports banks and credit card companies in 30 countries. Meanwhile, they claim that the REST API is as secure - or even more secure - than what banks already offer. This could be very disruptive indeed.
