The forum is set to begin this afternoon, just after 1 p.m. EST, and the dozens of expected participants not only include the names mentioned above, but also Craiglist founder Craig Newmark, Wendy Lea of GetSatisfaction, Shantanu Narayen of Adobe and Sal Iannuzzi of Monster. Individuals were selected based on their proven experience in using technology to improve cost management and customer service.

According to the White House blog, the forum is less a discussion about cool websites and more an exploration of how to revolutionize the way that the government uses technology. While the current administration has impressively embraced social media and web technologies, it's clear that its mission is to accomplish much more.

To that purpose, OMB Director Peter Orszag writes:

"Twenty years ago, people who came to work in the federal government had better technology at work than at home. Today, that’s no longer the case. The American people deserve better service from their government, and better return for their tax dollars. This forum is part of our efforts to modernize government and bring us into the 21st century."
