LONDON -- The Daily Mail posed an important question on Thursday: Who WILL speak for England?
The front-page editorial follows Prime Minister David Cameron's widely criticised attempts to negotiate the terms of the UK's relationship with the European Union ahead of a forthcoming referendum.
"Today the Mail asks a question of profound significance to our destiny as a sovereign nation and the fate of our children and our grandchildren," it began under the thundering headline.
Twitter, as always, had plenty of ideas.
Road-rage hero Ronnie Pickering, David Brent, Cat Bin Lady and the Chuckle Brothers were all mooted as suggestions for a national spokesperson as the hashtag #WhoWillSpeakForEngland started trending overnight. Here's who could be speaking up for the country sometime soon.
