For the Holidays: Give the Gift of Wikipedia

Rather than try and navigate the stampede to the malls that is Black Friday in the US, the Wikimedia Foundation has setup a new way to support your favorite free encyclopedia with a charitable gift this holiday season. The organization has launched “Gift of Knowledge,” a holiday gift drive that allows you to make a donation to Wikimedia on someone else’s behalf. By donating, you will receive a certificate you can give to the recipient informing them of their gift.

Where do the donations go? Wikimedia offers the following statistics:

If you and 99 other people donate...

$200 – We can make Wikipedia available in developing countries through DVDs, books and pamphlets.

$100 – We can pay for two Wikipedia Academy events in Africa.

$60 – We can send three students to our annual Wikimania conference.

$40 – We can deliver 100 million pageviews of free information!

The “Gift of Knowledge” campaign runs through December 22nd. Gifts can be made at http://donate.wikimedia.org.
