According to the Associated Press, Scott, now 81, has been with NBC since he was a 16-year-old page. He joined Today as a weatherman until Al Roker took over, and for the past several years has appeared on the show to commemorate centenarians (people who reach the age of 100) on the air.

In 1989, then-First Lady Barbara Bush stepped away from her husband's inaugural parade to acknowledge Scott.

"America's first family chose to single out America's weatherman," Today host Matt Lauer said. "I remember smiling from ear to ear at that moment for Willard."

The Dec. 15 broadcast of Today will include a tribute to Scott's years on the show and his place as a staple of American television.
