Instead of waiting for wireless carriers to approve and push out software updates for phones running Windows 10 Mobile, Microsoft is taking matters into its own hands.

Microsoft quietly announced on its Ignite blog that it will "proactively update supported devices with necessary updates to address issues."

Although the blog post refers to updates for business and enterprise licenses, ZDNET confirmed with a Microsoft spokesperson that the new move will apply to all devices running Windows 10 Mobile, whether business or personal.

The change -- as minor and boring as it may sound -- is a big win for users.

Currently, Microsoft sends its update code to the wireless carriers for approval first. After that, the software update is pushed out to respective devices.

It's a less than ideal situation that often leaves many devices without the latest update for months; sometimes, devices never get an update at all.

With Microsoft in charge of pushing out future software updates for Windows 10 Mobile devices, users will hopefully be able to see quicker software updates that add new features to their devices. Most importantly, faster updates will allow users to benefit from more frequent security fixes.

The new change will give Microsoft more control, similar to how Apple is able to directly push out new iOS updates to devices.

The situation for Windows 8.1 devices that will get a free upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile isn't quite so hopeful: Wireless carriers will still be in charge of that.
