Microsoft Plans the Next Windows
Although Microsoft hasn't even launched Windows 8 yet (that's due to happen Oct. 26), it's already begun planning the next version of Windows, which it has codenamed "Blue," ZDNet
Samsung Selling Tons of Phones
New data from Gartner says mobile consumers are gobbling up Samsung phones, and the company widened its worldwide market share over Nokia and Apple. Samsung now commands 21.6% of the global smartphone market compared with Nokia's 19.9% and Apple's 6.9%. For the same period as year Samsung had just 16.3%.
The data includes all kinds of phones, not just smartphones, but Gartner attributes Samsung's rapid rise to "high-profile smartphone launches," such as the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S III. Demand for the latter was "particularly strong," Gartner says. Samsung is expected to unveil a new smartphone -- perhaps an upgraded Galaxy Note -- at the end of August.
Air Force Test Craft to Reach Mach 6
The U.S. Air Force is testing a new kind of plane that can reach "hypersonic" speeds within the atmosphere -- defined as anything above Mach 5 -- CNN reports. The X-51A Waverider will hit Mach 6 for about 300 seconds later today, then crash-land into the Pacific Ocean, transmitting its data back to the testers.
