Wis.dm is yet another new content-based social network that's fairly generic in nature. The Cambridge, MA-based site, which appeared at the Brave New Web conference, is most easily described in terms of other services (rarely a good sign) - it combines elements of del.icio.us, Digg and MySpace to form a media sharing site that's fairly indistinguishable from the pack.

Users have profile pages, of course, with a photo and a list of stuff they've submitted: web links, photos, documents, text and YouTube videos. The videos are embedded in the site, of course.

We have nothing against generic media sharing sites, and Imeem and eSnips have proven that the model can work. The difference, however, is that those services are literally YouTube clones expanded to all media: it's the ability to rate, comment on and share media across social networks that makes them so viral. People use those sites as hosts and the sharing frequently happens elsewhere. That's not the case with Wis.dm, which has taken the del.icio.us approach - aggregating media in one place. That model doesn't have the same viral possibilities, and it'll probably go the same way as obscure bookmarking sites like Jots and SpinSpy.
