In the 1970s, the Land of Oz was a thriving theme park. Today, it sits nearly abandoned in the North Carolina hills.
The park used to allow guests to mingle with Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion and the Wicked Witch of the West. They could see props from the film and take an artificial balloon ride. Since it officially closed in 1980, the Land of Oz has fallen victim to thieves and vandals, who sneak into the park to steal the golden bricks and other small props. Goodbye, yellow brick road.
In his latest series, "Bizarro", photographer Seph Lawless takes viewers out of Kansas and into Oz, with his haunting photos of the now-defunct park.
"It sits hidden on top of a mountain...so being there was almost like entering another planet," Lawless told Mashable. "It was hauntingly beautiful and completely out of this world."
The magic of the park is still resurrected each October for the Autumn at Oz event, where the park is opened for one weekend only.
