In a moment of raw emotion captured on camera, a British woman experiences hearing sound for the first time in her life.

The video shows Joanne Milne after a doctor turned on the cochlear implant she had received four weeks earlier. Milne gets completely overwhelmed, bursting into tears as she listens to the sound of her audiology specialist reciting the days of the week.

Milne suffers from Usher syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that results in loss of vision and hearing. Now 40, she lost her sight in her mid-20s.

On Twitter, Milne expressed gratitude that the video is drawing more attention to the disorder.

@laurenlaverne Yes..and raising awareness of Usher is amazing. I hope it inspires other deafblind people to have cochlear implants fitted :)— Jo Milne (@jomilne10) March 27, 2014
