On Earth and in Space, Leaders Mourn Mandela's Passing
Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa and the anti-apartheid hero, died at the age of 95 on Thursday, South Africa President Jacob Zuma confirmed. Across the globe and even on the International Space Station, leaders and organizations paid their respects to the world legend.

“No one did more, in our time, to advance the values and aspirations of the United Nations. Nelson Mandela showed us what is possible in our world," UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said.

In the Johannesburg, South Africa, people poured into the streets to express their support for the late leader.

A memorial service is planned for Monday, and Zuma said Mandela will be buried on Dec. 15.
