The World Solar Challenge, which finishes on Sunday, Oct. 25, sees solar powered cars race over 3,021 kilometres (1,877 miles) through the Australian Outback, from the top of the Northern Territory to the bottom of South Australia. First place was taken Thursday by Dutch team Nuon, and 42 teams from 25 countries are now either finishing their last legs or celebrating a well-earned finish.
Teams from the Netherlands took out both first and second place this year, with Nuon coming first with their car 'Nuna 8' and second placers Twente with "Red One," a three-minute time gap between them. The cars speed across the country powered only by sunlight in a bid to help promote solar-powered car research.
