To participate, bands and solo artists are asked to upload their original songs to the WorldSings website, which, is essentially a social network for bands to share their music and fans to interact. Members of the community then vote for their favorites, with the top 20 competing for a $500,000 first prize at an event to be held just over a year from now at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.
While the prospect of half a million dollars and center stage in Las Vegas will likely be enough to lure plenty of artists, the WorldSings’ site itself doesn’t offer much new in the way of music discovery or community. The design very much mimics that of MySpace, but unfortunately it lacks the robust functionality of MySpace Music or a pure play music service like Imeem or Last.fm.
There are artists profiles where you can listen to music or check out videos, leave wall-like comments, and see other fans. There is also some basic "fan club" functionality and the ability to browse events in your city. Most of the bare necessities of a music social network seem to be there - there's just nothing that extraordinary, other than the prize money of course.
It’s difficult to see WorldSings being a huge success on its own, but with $1 million on the line, it will certainly get the attention of artists, who will in turn encourage their fans to come on over and vote. Whether they will stick around to do much more with WorldSings is very much to-be-determined.
