NYtimes reports that Yahoo is considering Google's OpenSocial alliance, which would be another huge boost for this initiative that will enable creation of tools and service which work across many web platforms. So far, Google, Friendster, hi5, imeem, LinkedIn, MySpace, Ning, Oracle, orkut, Plaxo, Salesforce.com, Six Apart, XING and many others are on board. If Yahoo joins, that would mean practically everyone is on the OpenSocial team, except Facebook whose founder Mark Zuckerberg has been secretive and cryptic about the issue.
Yahoo's comment on these rumors has been mildly positive: “Yahoo has a rich history of supporting open standards, such as OpenID and Apache Hadoop, as we believe industry collaboration is beneficial to the developer community and the Web as a whole. While we are evaluating OpenSocial as an emerging standard, we do not comment on speculation or rumors.” With Microsoft's takeover bid looming over them, they certainly have a lot to consider here.
