Yahoo Redesigns Homepage, Adds Infinite Scrolling

Yahoo has redesigned its homepage, the first such move for the company in four years.

The new design, which also extends to the mobile versions of the site, is not a dramatic overhaul by any means. The main menu of Yahoo's many services still sits in the upper left corner of the homepage, and a large part of screen real estate above the fold is taken over by a carousel that shows currently breaking news.

Perhaps the most notable change is infinite scrolling, which delivers more and more content as the user scrolls down the page.

Another change includes the actual content that is shown: Yahoo lets users remove the news items they don't like and learns their reading habits.

The right side of the home page displays widgets (Yahoo calls them "utilities") showing weather, finance and sports info, as well as featured videos and Flickr photos. These can also be shut down via a button that shows up on mouseover.

"It's more personalized and it's more dynamic. People said, 'Give me a reason to come back to Yahoo! a few times a day.' And now the content's always updating and refreshing, that gives you all the information you want. And a few things that are nicer and a bit of a surprise," said Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, who unveiled the new design on NBC's Today show.

As a side note, it was unusual Yahoo debuted its new homepage on the NBC's Today show, when the company has had a partnership with ABC and its Good Morning America program. Not to mention Google Morning America beat the Today show in viewership recently and has the largest audience it has seen in seven years.
