It is one of the greatest questions of our time: Yo or no?

The inanely simple messaging app Yo has raised -- or perhaps lowered -- the bar on conversation by allowing you to send a single word to your contacts with one click. For those who haven't already guessed, that one word is "yo." That's it. That's all you're allowed to say.

It's good news for those who have trouble starting a conversation, or are just incredibly lazy. But when you're unsure about when to send a Yo, it's tough to know what's acceptable in every situation. Is it ok to Yo? Probably not.

So before you reach for your smartphone to wish Grandma a happy birthday or text your date from last night, you might want to double check whether you're committing a social yeaux pas.
