MySpace Notifier isn't the only app hoping to serve addicted MySpacers: You Got Comments has just arrived on the scene, providing a Windows application that will pop-up an alert or send an email or text message to alert you to new comments, messages, friend requests, birthdays and event invitations.

You can also set the interval for the updates - I'm not sure how MySpace would feel about you hitting their server "constantly" (less than ten minutes between updates), but every hour or so seems reasonable. In fact, this is a question that was raised in the comments of the MySpace Notifier post: it seems that MySpace isn't particularly keen on the scraping of data from their pages, but downloadable apps like BadderAdder are beyond their reach. They do, however, go after web-based services that scrape MySpace data - the various MySpace dating sites, for instance.

The You Got Comments interface is best described as "simple" - just a preferences panel and a little pop-up whenever you receive alerts. The functionality is also simple and easily cloned, but MySpace is so huge that it could probably support hundreds of these things. The most likely outcome for YGC: a few hundred downloads, unless they can get it listed on some of the popular free software directories. The way to make such an app viral is to allow the posting of responses from the desktop or cellphone, adding a "posted via You Got Comments" message to the end (similar to the MySpace bulletins from Frengo). But until MySpace officially endorses these external apps through the creation of an API, their status and continued functioning isn't guaranteed.
