YouTube Ads Must Meet Guidelines

Although any regulation of video sharing sites is usually a bad thing, this time it seems to favor the user. The National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus ruled yesterday that ads on user-generated video sites - YouTube, Revver, Metacafe etc - must adhere to the same guidelines as those on TV. You can't, for instance, upload an ad that's misleading or makes false claims, and you can't make false claims about competing products.

The decision came about following claims by Dyson that its vacuum cleaners were superior when it came to vacuuming dirt without clogging. The ad was posted to YouTube, and a rival company contacted NAD claiming it was deceptive in the way it compared the vacuum cleaners - Dyson has since pulled the clip. Here's hoping the BlendTec guy really can destroy iPods with that blender.
