YouTube Debuts New Windows Phone App After Microsoft-Google Battle

An updated, native YouTube app for Windows is back in the Windows Phone store, following a fight between Microsoft and Google over app advertisements.

Earlier this year, the Redmond, Wash., and Mountain View, Calif., companies bickered over Microsoft failing to include advertising on the YouTube app. Google, which owns the video-sharing site, then demanded that Microsoft take YouTube off the Windows Phone OS because of its lack of ads. The tech giants eventually made amends in May, and worked together to ensure compliance with each other's rules.

YouTube's new Windows app arrived in the Windows Phone store on Tuesday, CNET reported. The free Microsoft-developed app includes Windows-specific features such as the ability to "pin videos, playlists, channels and search queries to the Start screen as Live Tiles." It also supports Windows' "Kid's Corner" feature, a protected place on your phone for children to play age-appropriate videos.

What's more, Windows' YouTube app appears to have similar features to its iOS and Android counterparts, including the ability to manage playlists, uploads and lists, to manage YouTube profiles, to find videos, channels and playlists, as well as to share videos via social networks, email and text messages.
