Here's another test of the everythingitis theory: Yuku. If you remember, I'm hypothesizing that the "everything under one roof" idea (aka the portal strategy) won't be too successful for startups - specialized services that weave their way into the fabric of the web via open APIs and web widgets will likely see more growth. You can successfully aggregate all these services in one place, but you can't build them in-house.* From the site:

Yuku is profiles, image sharing, blogs and discussion boards all in one place. Your Yuku account has up to five different profiles - because you don't always want to use the same profile, but you do only want one account. At Yuku our purpose is to help people like you connect and communicate online as easily and safely as possible. You don't need to download anything to use Yuku. All you need is an account, your profile, and your favorite internet browser.

The design, branding and usability are top-notch, although they need to expose more content to users that aren't logged in (ie. the casual user who is deciding whether to sign up or not). Still, the key factor is whether the portal strategy can really work for a tiny startup. Place your bets now.
