When Community returns for a new season on Yahoo Screen, it will be without the study group's most perpetually plucky member.
Yvette Nicole Brown, who played Shirley on the show, has asked to be released from her contract with the show so that she can tend to her ailing father.

"My dad needs daily care and he needs me," Brown said in a statement via TV Guide, which first reported the news. "The idea of being away 16 hours a day for five months, I couldn't do it. It was a difficult decision for me to make, but I had to choose my dad."

Brown had been set to return for a new season of the Joel McHale-led comedy, which will be released on Yahoo! Screen after saving the show since it was canceled by NBC, and even joined the cast on stage this summer at Comic-Con.
Brown says she will continue with plans to recur on CBS's Odd Couple with the show beginning its run in midseason, saying the single-cam comedy has a much more flexible schedule than the one she would have had to keep as a series regular on Community.
The new season of Community does not have an official premiere date.
