Zimbio is rolling out a new release today. As mentioned previously, Zimbio is a community site that's like a social network crossed with a wiki: users create public portals on certain topics with photo albums, headlines, links, news, group blogs and forums. The featured portal on Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle, for instance, provides a good overview of his life, with more up to the minute news, blog entries and discussions than you'd get from a Wikipedia entry. Other topics range from parenting to politics.

Today's release adds private portals: you can now create private pages for your friends, family, and colleagues. These portals are invite only and could be used as an alternative to installing wiki software. Like the other Zimbio portals, they allow you to create photo albums, manage a group blog, add links and news feeds, post to a forum and add notes. You can also track keywords on Flickr, Yahoo News and Sphere - when your words turn up on those services, the information will appear in your portal. There are lots of potential uses for the new feature: a lightweight wiki for your business projects, a media sharing site for your family or a research tool. The problem they face is that there's a massive amount of overlap with other services: it's hard to stand out from the crowd.
