Zooomr, the photo-sharing site that's trying to get ahead of the pack by piling on the features, will launch a new service later today called ZMail. The ZMail feature adds internal messaging to the site, allowing users to notify their friends of updates. It's the latest addition to a wealth of Zooomr features, including geotagging (with Google Maps), support for multiple languages and locales, trackbacks, photo clustering by location and tag, notes, embedding images within images ("portals"), the ability to add audio to pics and more.

But the story is made all the more interesting by the fact that Zooomr is run largely by one developer - 18 year-old Kris Tate - with help from prominent web photographer Thomas Hawk. And they're not burning through millions in VC - they've raised $50,000 so far. With Flickr, Webshots, Photobucket, Imageshack, Fotolog and seemingly hundreds of startups in the photo space, I've always been skeptical about the chances for another new entrant. Zooomr, however, continues to execute well, and I expect that something will come of it - perhaps an acquisition by someone who wants Kris on board.
