13 Reasons Why ended Season 1 with plenty of cliffhangers that will no doubt take center stage in the now-forthcoming Season 2. The biggest by far was the fate of Alex Standall (Miles Heizer), who ends up in intensive care from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Fans speculated that Alex wasn't responsible for the attempt -- that it was Tyler (Devin Druid) -- but Heizer told The Hollywood Reporter that Tyler had nothing to do with it.

Of course, that doesn't mean that Tyler isn't planning something terrifying when he lays out photos of his classmates from Hannah's tapes and locks up the case full of guns in his bedroom.

Alex is introduced in the early episodes as Hannah Baker's (Katherine Langford) estranged friend from sophomore year. After he hears his name on her tapes, Alex reacts differently from most of the others, and often disagrees with them about how to proceed.

"It was interesting to see similarities between Alex and Hannah, because there are a lot of warning signs throughout the season," Heizer told THR. Alex vocalizes his guilt, puts himself in harm's way, and also has access to guns because his father works in law enforcement.

Heizer also pointed out that as of the Season 1 finale, Alex is still alive, and that Season 2 could explore his experience as a survivor dealing with trauma and recovery.

"That's another subject that's very rarely shown onscreen and is probably a lot more common than people think it is; People attempting to take their lives and it not happening," he said. "I'm sure that will bring a crazy set of issues. It would be interesting to go into that."

13 Reasons Why is now streaming on Netflix.
