5 under-the-radar video games we can't wait to check out this fall
Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer — so this weekend we're previewing the games, movies, music and more that our staff is most excited about for fall.
Below, check out five video game releases we can't wait to play.
Shadow Warrior 2
This is a first-person ninja game from Flying Wild Hog and published by Devolver Digital. Following up on 2013's promising first entry, the sequel is all about piling on more: more weapons (70-plus), more ways to play (a new four-player co-op mode), more options (you can replay finished missions) and really, just a whole lot more freedom.

ReCore
There hasn't been nearly enough noise about ReCore, an Xbox One exclusive from Comcept and Armature Studio. It's an action game in which the plucky female hero, Joule Adams, is accompanied by a gang of robots that each bring different tools to every combat encounter and puzzle. The game has drawn comparisons to Nintendo's Zelda series, which is always great company to keep.
ReCore comes to Windows 10 and Xbox One on Sept. 13.
The Tomorrow Children
The Tomorrow Children from Q-Games was announced in 2014 and has been making the beta test rounds in recent months, but it's proven difficult to classify. There are world-building elements that draw easy comparisons with Minecraft, but The Tomorrow Children has its own, distinctive visual style that immediately catches the eye.
It's a PlayStation 4 exclusive that launches on Sept. 6, but be aware: the September release is "early access," meaning the game is unfinished. The early access release will cost money, but the eventual final version -- which has no release date -- will be free-to-play.
Werewolves Within
While plenty of early virtual reality adopters are jazzed about Star Trek: Bridge Crew -- with good reason -- there's been decidedly less talk about Red Storm Entertainment's other big 2016 VR title. In Werewolves Within, wihch is inspired by the popular Mafia party game, you lie to friends and strangers alike about being a slavering, flesh-hungry beast. This game is more about social mechanics than play mechanics, and it really pops in VR.
Werewolves Within comes to Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR on Dec. 6.
Steep
Steep is all about letting you experience the thrills of winter extreme sports without actually risking life and limb. Setting players loose in a completely open, online-connected mountainscape, Steep gives you the tools to explore and compete via skiing, snowboarding, paragliding and wingsuit. It all comes together in gorgeously rendered environments that are meant to teem with life as all players do their thing in a shared world.
Steep comes to PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Dec. 2.
