A quick-thinking 5-year-old was able to lead herself and her grandmother out of their burning house thanks to a fire safety lesson she learned at school.

Cloe Woods, a preschooler at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Kenner, Louisiana learned a valuable lesson when her class visited the Kenner Fire Department in October, which saved her life as well as her grandmother's on Wednesday.

CBS affiliate WWLTV reports the stove in Cloe's home caught fire Wednesday morning which triggered the smoke alarm. That's when Cloe ran into her blind grandmother's room, told her to grab the girl's shoulder, and led her out of the house.

"She told my mom to hold her shoulder and that they had to get out of the house," Cloe's mother, Shone Arceneaux told WWLTV.

After the making sure that her grandmother and dog were safely outside, Cloe then went knocking on neighbors' doors, looking for water to extinguish the flames.

"She saved her grandmother's life and saved her own life."

Arceneaux, who was bringing her older children to their carpool stop when the fire broke out then returned home to find Cloe hard at work.

"She was running and telling the neighbors to call 911, and I said what's going on. She said the house is on fire, so I jump out of the car and said what?," Arceneaux said.

Kenner Fire Department Chief John Hellmers said it was clear that Cloe was a hero that day.

"She saved her grandmother's life and saved her own life," said Hellmers.

Cloe's school has set up a GoFundMe page for the family, who was displaced by the fire.
