Most moms realize that breast pumping isn’t the easiest part of taking care of a newborn. From shopping for the right device to finding the time to pump in peace, breast pumps are one of those devices that haven’t grown enough with the way women live their lives — until now.

From Medela, a trusted leader in breast pumps, comes Sonata®, a smart breast pump offering a hospital-performance pumping experience for new moms. Accompanying the revolutionary new pump is the MyMedela® app that can be used to track your baby’s activities while giving vital tips from experts.

It wasn’t an easy journey creating this new pump. Here’s how the experts at Medela made it all happen.

There are real moms involved in developing new products

“We knew we wanted to create something different, a game changer that would simplify and help moms give their baby breast milk,” says Medela’s Director of User Centered Design, Deanna Gilbert. “When we set out to create Sonata, we spent time listening to countless moms and families to develop a better pumping experience. We want to give moms the best. I’m proud of how we were able to capture their desires and needs into the product, and as a woman and a mom, I’m honored to be a part of it.”

In addition to tapping into real moms who influenced Sonata's user-friendly design, Medela's engineers and development team are made up of real parents who are able to draw from real experiences. Each one is passionate about improving the pumping experience.

It’s the breast pump that listens to your body

Most may not consider how rhythms can impact a mom's breast pumping session, but this is just one of the many details that matter. Medela’s two clinically-tested pumping rhythms — paired with the Responsive Pump Technology — adjusts to mom’s body and environment to provide comfort, ease, and an unprecedented amount of control.

“With all of our products, we draw inspiration from moms to build on our 50-year-long commitment to supporting their breastfeeding journey,” says Melissa Gonzales, Managing Director of Medela USA. “With Sonata we pushed further, considering pumping and how it fits into her day-to-day life, to produce what we believe is transformative technology.”

This transformative technology ends up covering the finer details that most moms face when pumping; for one thing, the two-pound personal-use breast pump is extremely quiet, giving busy moms a chance to pump with discretion. That means you can pump late at night — or in the middle of a conference call — without waking your baby.

To get to the heart of issues facing new moms, Deanna Gilbert put herself in the middle of the action to find out what moms were missing. She pumped in an open room with other moms and listened to their stories, tips, and tricks — an experience that ended up being more helpful than the hundreds of in-field interviews she conducted in the past.

The app is your one-stop shop

Moms know that pumping is just one of many things to keep track of with a newborn. The MyMedela® app is an absolute necessity to keep organized.

Timers and alerts through real-time notifications help moms stay on schedule, while Sonata’s Smart Solution™ connects seamlessly to MyMedela and records data from the breast pump to your smartphone. Moms also get a personalized dashboard that sends breastfeeding tips and educational information for peace of mind. As an added bonus, they can keep records on the baby’s weight, sleep patterns, and even diaper changes, putting all the useful information that moms need in one place.

New this summer, moms can use MyMedela to access 24/7 LC ™, a membership that offers an instant video connection through a smartphone to a professional lactation consultant any time they need it.
