Afeni Shakur, mother of Tupac, dies at age 69
Afeni Shakur, the activist mother of legendary rapper Tupac, has died. She was 69.
Shakur reportedly passed on Monday night in her Northern California home in Sausalito, due to possible cardiac arrest -- according to the Marin County Sheriff's department, which tweeted the news out. They responded to a 911 call at 9:34 p.m. local time and took her to the hospital. She was later pronounced dead at 10:28 p.m.

Shakur was born Alice Faye Williams, but changed her name after joining the Black Panthers in the 1960s. She and fellow BP members were later arrested on charges of plotting to blow up department stores and police stations. The charges were eventually dropped, and Shakur gave birth to a son, Tupac Amaru, just one month after being released from prison.
Tupac went on to become one of the most famous rappers of all time, and dedicated a song, "Dear Mama," to Afeni.
After his death in 1996, his mother created the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation to support young people in the arts and was the head of her son's estate.
