A woman was arrested after she boarded an Air France flight to Paris on Monday night with a child hidden in a carry-on bag.

About halfway through the flight from Istanbul to Paris, a passenger across the aisle noticed something was moving inside the woman's bag, according to Planet.fr, a French news site. He alerted the crew who opened the bag and discovered the child.

"Nobody could believe it," a passenger told Planet.fr.

The woman, who is a French resident, had started the adoption process for the four-year-old Haitian girl, AFP reported. Air France confirmed the incident to Mashable.

The woman was taking the child back to France, but was not allowed to board the second leg of her journey in Istanbul.

The woman then decided to buy another ticket and hide the child in her bag. After boarding, she placed the bag at her feet underneath a blanket. Halfway through the flight, the girl started complaining that she needed to go to the bathroom, and she was discovered.

The woman and child were moved to the front of the plane for the remainder of the five-hour flight

French police met the plane at landing and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

"Air France will fully cooperate with the investigation underway being conducted by the competent authorities," the airline told Mashable.

Witnesses said the child was "doing well" but flight crew and surrounding passengers were "very shocked" after the discovery.
