India's leading telecom operator by user base is showering its broadband subscribers with swathes of free lifetime data.

While Airtel calls this a celebratory "surprise" to thank its 2 million broadband users, a mark it breached last November, the move is clearly its counter-strike on Reliance Jio — the hot, new disruptor in India's telecom space.

Jio's dirt cheap data offerings that has led to its swift customer acquisition has more than threatened India's other cellular service providers. The Reliance Industries owned company is now planning to disrupt the wired broadband market with its own FTTH service that would offer Gigabit speeds at a fraction of the cost of current broadband service providers.

Having learnt its lesson with Jio's free 4G LTE offering, Airtel is taking pre-emptive measures to ensure its customers don't leave it for Jio.

Airtel is now randomly giving away free monthly data for life to its existing users along with unlimited access to its movies library. All users have to do is visit this site and enter their broadband connection number.

Unsurprisingly, Indians couldn't hide their excitement. Free data is a pot of gold.

Someone unlocked 175 GB monthly free data for a lifetime.

If that wasn't enough, there's someone who was promised 420 GB free data every month for life. Yes, you read that right.

The data allocation, however, seems most random. As users discussed here.

But seems Airtel is yet to pick up speed, literally, as one user complained of late activation.

And amidst all this excitement, there are some who couldn't handle Airtel's aggressive marketing.

If only free data could solve other issues with their service!
