The production of long-running TV game show Jeopardy! will be on hiatus after its host Alex Trebek is recovering from surgery.

Trebek, 77, had an operation to remove blood clots on the brain, a condition called subdural hematoma, after a fall he endured in October.

The host of the show since 1984 issued a video statement online on Thursday, telling fans that he had a "slight medical problem" and that he expects to be back at work soon, then thanking people for their concern.

"Surgery was performed, after two days in the hospital I came home to start recovery. The prognosis is excellent, and I expect to be back in the studio taping more Jeopardy! programs very, very soon," he said.

According to a statement by Sony Pictures Entertainment obtained by NBC News, Trebek was admitted to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on Dec. 15 and had surgery the next day.

The company expects taping of Jeopardy! to resume in mid-January.
