Kevin Spacey movie pulled from its prestigious film festival premiere
As details and still more sexual misconduct allegations against Kevin Spacey come to light, yet another of his upcoming projects is suffering the consequences: the Ridley Scott film All the Money in the World.
Set to premiere next week as the closing gala at AFI Fest – the Los Angeles festival that has launched many a late Oscar contender – All the Money in the World was pulled from the lineup Monday, according to its production company TriStar Pictures.
Though there was already Oscar buzz around All the Money, it appears TriStar and distributor Sony is attempting to go the same route as Netflix, which distanced itself from the star of its hit show House of Cards by not only firing Spacey but removing him from promotional shots a couple days ago.
While several employees from House of Cards have come forward to accuse Spacey of widespread sexual misconduct on set, no reports of such behavior in his 10-day shoot on All the Money in the World have surfaced.
In a statement, TriStar said its decision to pull the film from AFI was made to spare those involved with the project from an undoubtedly uncomfortable premiere.
“Given the current allegations surrounding one of [the film's] actors and out of respect for those impacted, it would be inappropriate to celebrate at a gala at this difficult time," the statement reads. “However, a film is not the work of one person. There are over 800 other actors, writers, artists, craftspeople and crew who worked tirelessly and ethically on this film, some for years, including one of cinema’s master directors. It would be a gross injustice to punish all of them for the wrongdoings of one supporting actor in the film."
The film, which also features Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams, centers around the kidnapping of the 16-year-old grandson of billionaire oil mogul John Paul Getty II, played by Spacey. In the film, John Paul Getty II refuses to pay the ransom, leading the boy's mother (Williams) to desperation.
For now, the film is still slated for wide release on Dec. 22.
