An 11-foot alligator was found in a storm drain in Fort Meyers, Florida, after the Lee County Public Works office received complaints about a foul odor in the area.

The alligator had unfortunately died while it was stuck in the drain, and the subsequent blockage had caused the odor neighbors complained about.

Public Works employee Roger Desjarlais posted a photo of the animal as workers were pulling it out of the drain. Eleven feet is an average size for a typical American alligator.

"About twice a year we get calls for gators," said public information officer Betsy Clayton to News Press. Most alligators found in the drains are significantly smaller.

According to residents, there are many alligators who live in a nearby lake. "This one must've made a wrong turn into a drainage pipe," said resident Tracey Galloway to News Press.
