Surprise: Allison Janney reprised her role as Press Secretary C.J. Cregg at a White House press briefing on Friday.

The West Wing alum walked out to the podium in character, cracking jokes about both President Obama and his current press secretary, Josh Earnest.

"Josh is out today. He has, I believe it's a root canal -- yeah, he has a root canal. But let's be honest: I'm better at this than he is anyway," she said.

But Janney, who currently stars on the CBS sitcom Mom, soon stepped out of character to explain why she was really at the White House: the Champions of Change event.

Mom is a comedy that also covers serious topics like addiction, recovery, sobriety and overdose.

For this event, Janney joined governmental leaders as well as Mom co-creator and executive producer Chuck Lorre to honor 10 individuals from across the country who are being recognized as “White House Champions of Change for Advancing Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery.”

CBS said Friday that as part of the event, the Mom team will also participate on a panel with Surgeon General Vivek Murthy about the portrayal of addiction and recovery in the media.

The press pool, naturally, nerded out over Janney's surprise visit.

Sorry West Wing fans: Danny and President Josiah Bartlet were not in attendance.
