Following a false start last week, Amazon's Australian store launched on Tuesday — at last.

The arrival of the internet retail giant has received plenty of media coverage in the lead up, with much of the focus on how Amazon would smash local bricks and mortar competition through better pricing and service.

So far though, the launch pricing of products on Amazon hasn't impressed everyone. Many products are no cheaper than Australian stores, although there are smatterings of good -- and terrible -- deals to be had.

On the Amazon homepage, one of the items featured is a pair of Sennheiser HD 4.50 wireless headphones for A$249, but you can buy it for a little less at A$237 over at Harvey Norman -- perhaps a coincidence given its chairman has been most vocal against Amazon.

This GoPro HERO6 goes for A$679, a similar price you can get from Australian retailers, or for around A$600 from a grey market version.

These Bose QuietComfort 35 headphones are on sale for A$519, but they can be bought from a local store for A$435.

In some cases, sellers are listing products for higher prices on Amazon.

Over in appliances, this Braun shaver costs $214.69 on Amazon. The same product is available at Bing Lee for A$149, a significant price difference.

While the pricing hasn't been so impressive on some electronics, Amazon's Australian outpost seems to be very competitive on gaming (except Nintendo) and toys.

The Xbox One S Minecraft edition console is A$319 on Amazon, a decent amount cheaper than JB Hi-Fi's A$359 price. A PS4 copy of Star Wars Battlefront II, if you even still want to play it, is A$39 on Amazon compared to JB Hi-Fi's A$59.

Lego's BB-8 play set is A$99.97 on Amazon, beating out Target Australia's price at A$119.20.

It's still very early days for Amazon in Australia, and just like every store, you'll need to do your homework (a.k.a. checking prices on Google) to determine whether you're looking a worthy deal or not.
