Amazon is launching its own Geek Squad competitor

Amazon is stretching its tentacles into a wide range of different industries and services. Now, the company is targeting Best Buy's Geek Squad installation and repair service.

Recode reports that Amazon has "quietly been hiring an army of in-house gadget experts" that will soon offer free Alexa troubleshooting, in addition to product installations, inside customers homes for a small fee.

The new service is already available in seven markets and is primarily focused on helping customers set up different smart home components. Things like controlling internet-connected lights with voice commands and answering the door from anywhere are just a few of the options that an Amazon expert can help a customer with — even if it requires visiting the home.

What's odd about this entire project is that Amazon already has a marketplace for handyman services like mounting TVs, cleaning carpets, and assembling furniture. Apparently the company thinks smart home assistance is a big enough market to break into its own service.

It makes sense when you consider the long-term prospect of the Amazon Echo — the company's voice-controlled smart speaker — and how it's being positioned as a hub for smart home products.

This new Geek Squad competitor could help remove one of the greatest barriers to entry in the smart home market: the cumbersome setup process.

In-home consultations are available through the company's website and are available in seven cities: Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Jose, and Orange County, California.

Whether customers actually use the service remains to be seen. Amazon is known by most people as an online retailer and shipping company. When Amazon workers start entering people's homes, it could open the flood gates to plenty of other business opportunities. We have a feeling this isn't the last we'll be hearing about Amazon workers showing up at your doorstep.
