Amazon removes doormats with Hindu gods after Twitter outcry in India
Amazon faced unexpected criticism from users in India for selling doormats and other products with religious figures on its American website. The controversy soon escalated into a Twitter campaign asking Indians to boycott the e-commerce platform and its app.
Numerous angry users began tweeting against the e-commerce platform for selling doormats with images of Hindu gods, Jesus Christ and verses from the Quran. Soon, #BoycottAmazon began trending on Twitter in India, with several people threatening to uninstall the app and give it a negative rating on various app stores.
The products were being sold by a retailer called Rock Bull, but most of the tweets seem to have been directed at Amazon. After the backlash, Amazon reportedly removed most of the products from its site.
